In 1987 two Swiss artists, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, put a maniacal machine together in a warehouse. It was about 100 feet long. They slapped it together. Loaded it up. (Very carefully.) Then they let it rip.
The result was a classic Rube Goldberg machine. So classic that Honda's Accord advertising group ripped it off for "Cog." And while "Cog" has all the slickness that big advertising budgets bring, it's a pale shadow of the original "The Way Things Go" (Der Lauf der Dinge).
Here's about 15 minutes of your life that you won't regret watching go by.
"The Way Things Go" (Der Lauf der Dinge) 1
"The Way Things Go" (Der Lauf der Dinge) 2
Honda's "Cog"
You're not kidding, no time wasted in watching. I see stuff like this and it's just another reason why I love guys. Guys who tinker, think things through, play with purpose but somehow never lose sight of fun, and just because...sigh...
