Obama's problem is that he's bracketed himself with the Lovin' Spoonful

Well, if you believe all the ancient prophesies and calendars, we are on the "Eve of Destruction" in 12/12.

But, the real scary part is that I actually remember watching the Lovin' Spoonful on Shindig in real time. Shudder!

This seems appropriate, but, then again, next summer "Street Fighting Man" may be the tune du jour.

Summer in the City

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

The neat thing about "Eve of Destruction" is that can be dated fairly accurately from its lyrics, namely the line "you may leave here for four days in space". The second manned Gemini flight, Gemini 4, set an American endurance record with a four-day flight from June 3-7, 1965. The next mission, Gemini 5, broke that record with an eight-day flight from August 21-29, 1965.

/space nerd mode off

The song itself sounds like it was influenced by Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" which was released on July 20, according to Wikipedia.

Oddly enough, I've also been listening to the Lovin' Spoonful lately, particularly their song "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice". There's a TV performance I've watched a number of times on YouTube:

/Yes, I realize I'm trampling all over the points you were making with your song selection. Why do you ask? :)
