Levon Helm (May 26, 1940 -- April 19, 2012): "Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train" [Bumped]

God grant him rest and peace. Both he and his family.

May his memory be a blessing.

And he shall be Levon
And he shall be a good man
And he shall be Levon
In tradition with the family plan
And he shall be Levon
And he shall be a good man
He shall be Levon

"Levon"
From: Madman Across The Water
Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin

And yes, it was written for him.

Talented Southern boy made good music with The Band.
Would be interesting to peek at the guest-book after the funeral.

Something very memorable from my youth is passing away, reminding us that all this is fleeting.

What a wonderful guy, and what great stuff he has left behind. Godspeed, Levon. Thanks for all the great music. "Rock of Ages" is still one of my most favorite albums.

This news makes me very sad.

I wish Levon and his family all the best.

Oh my! I just knew I was looking at the legendary Carols Hathcock, Marine Sniper, in that scene in Tennessee. In that same movie, in the snowy mountain scene, Bob Lee Swagger snipes another sniper targeting him. The round strikes the guy's eye AFTER having passed through his scope. Come's down to who was fastest on the trigger, dudn't it? Carlos Hathcock actually made such a shot in Vietnam.

Levon's character was a favorite in "Shooter".

Aw damn...
Damn.
Thanks, Gerard.
And thank you, Levon.

PBS has sporadically been running a series called "Soundtracks", and more abbreviated related pieces called "Quick Hits" on the PBS Arts website.

Here's a link the one they did on Helm and the "Midnite Rambles" he has been hosting at his Woodstock barn.

Great show, and a great interview. He will be missed.

The vigil has ended. R.I.P., Levon.

Surviving cancer is easy compared to making a life after. Levon still shows us the way....

I know we are supposed to reflect on the blessing his life was, and no one lives forever.

But, damn, damn, damn, damn, damn. This sucks.

Our local rock radio station just got around to noticing this story and said he died today. sigh.

From bobdylan.com:

He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I'm going to miss him, as I'm sure a whole lot of others will too.
