I wonder if the calculation was made that the Republicans would never dare bring impeachment charges for two Democratic presidents in a row, and so Obama would have quite a bit of freedom of action.

The technology for doing it exists and isn't that difficult.
The technology exists and it's both dirt simple and almost undetectable. They didn't want to know where the weapons eventually went, they wanted to know where they were eventually found -- along with the number of bodies...

Theory is that there was hope by the ATF (and the White House?) that enough of the guns would show up at crime scenes in the U.S. and Mexico, and could be traced back to gun dealers in the U.S. There would then be a huge cry from the citizens for more gun control and they would force their elected officials to implement more legislation, thereby creating more gun laws, and adding more hammers for the ATF to use against the law abiding gun owners and gun shops. It was just a theory, though...

I can't believe Jerry is that naive. He must be asking his questions rhetorically.
To me, it's obvious. Obama and Holder wanted to have evidence of "assault weapons" making it from perfectly legal sales in the U.S. (due to our lax gun laws, doncha know) to the drug war in Mexico, killing lots of Mexicans, to use as a stalking horse to advance anti-gun legislation.
As such, a conspiracy against the free exercise of civil rights, and -- since deaths eventuated -- a federal capital crime. (18USC242)

Don't forget to include in the calculus that Obama himself explicitly said to the Brady woman that his administration was working on gun control "under the radar." Looks like the radar sweeps lower than Barack thought.
