I actually knew "metonymy" from an old James Thurber story about a teacher of his who actually once taught such usage in grammar class.

Please stop using words that have fallen into desuetude.
The ones I didn't know were
synteresis and ecpyrosis: didn't know the Greeks believed this.
I believe I heard Jesse the Jig Jackson refer to hebetude as the state of being one who lived in Hymie-Town.
