American Dreams: Grace Kelly by the Pool in "High Society"

Grace Kelly sure was perfect, wasn't she?

...Its not just the looks, but how she moves, talks, acts... the whole thing thing.

Sad to think she married the wrong guy.

In that it wasn't me, yes.

One of the greatest of Hollywood's movie musicals from the era of the greatest musical theater that America ever produced.

High Society was a musical version of the Broadway play "The Philadelphia Story", which was Katherine Hepburn's vehicle she used to revive her career in 1939. Howard Hughes bought the film rights to the play and gave them to Hepburn. It was made into a movie staring Hepburn opposite Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart in 1940.

In High Society, Grace Kelly played Katherine Hepburn's role as the love interest, Bing Crosby played the Cary Grant role as the lover, and Sinatra played Jimmy Stewart's role as the lover's rival.

High Society was set in Newport RI. The songs were written by Cole Porter. Louis Armstrong appeared as himself.

It was Kelly's last appearance in the movies before she went off to Monaco and married the Prince. The ring she wore in the movie was the one that Prince Ranier had given her.

If you haven't seen it. Do so.

Grace Kelly, so lovely. I guess she was kind of a Paris Hilton sort behind the scenes, unfortunately.

Too bad she was so short. If she had been six foot and brunette she'd look like my wife.

It just goes to show you that not every beautiful woman is willing to sell her soul to the devil for the silver screen. Tsk, tsk.

Content of Character doesn't translate through the silver screen. Nice to know as I never got to read all the behind the scenes news.

I agree, it was better back when we didn't know every last sordid detail of the lives of movie stars. But the cult of celebrity demands to know every single aspect of their lives, to live vicariously and bask in their glory.

If you can find a photo of the Kelly girls when they were young, you will see that one of the sisters was even prettier. That family had, and I hope still has, great genes.
