[My Slack Pages / 2013 ] Rhiannon: A Song From That Ancient World When Performances Were Not Phoned In

As the holder of a thirty-plus year crush on Ms. Nicks, I have to take offense at the "Brain of a singer" crack. She's not Sheryl Crow.

Agree. Stevie was a wonder. Fleetwood Mac in KC sometime in the early 80's was my last big venue concert. What a mess of heart and talent they were all together! I think it was the thirteen year old that tried to steal my doobie after I graciously offered him a puff that sealed the deal of no more "concerts". Hell of a talent that women. In retrospect I guess it was then I lost my faith in "America". I'm as much to blame as anyone. God help us all. Amen.

An Arizona girl.

But when she turned it on she could blow up the entire building and leave everyone charred and cheering in the rubble.

Ain't that the truth.

I firmly assert that all males of my generation (I'm 50 years old) have an eternal crush on Stevie Nicks...

Yeah Stevie, what a beautiful girl she was. Dumb as a box of sand, but so gorgeous. Sadly her voice went the way of the goat over time. At first it was quirky and cute, but it got bad over the years.

I think "Landslide" is my favorite song by her.

What the hell is all this "Stevie's dumb" BS? She's got more on the ball than most.

I've had a crush on her for 30+ years, and I'll kick the crap out anyone who has a problem with her.

Lucky directional mike.

I was a punk rocker as a kid, and, frankly -- next to the Eagles -- Fleetwood Mac was in my opinion everything that sucked about slick SoCal RockProduct®. The whole warmed-over hippie vibe they pushed -- the hair, the gypsy skirts, the precious occult posturing -- just seemed old, tired, and gross at the time. I mean, just look at Lindsey Buckingham -- the beard, the 'fro, the sloppy kimono. I mean, he looks like hell.

But everybody looked like hell back then. Everyone but Stevie Nicks.

Today, viewed through 36 years of golden nostalgia, it's easy to see the professionalism. musicianship, and raw talent that Mick Fleetwood and the gang had going on at the time. No autotune or ProTools; you either hit the right note or you didn't. Still, I will always associate Fleetwood Mac with the whole sleazy '70s Boomer vibe -- macrame, ferns, recycled furniture, cork wedges, and everywhere the reek of pot. (Admit it: Stevie looks baked to a crispy, golden brown in the video.)

While I will give the Mac credit where credit is due -- they were all consummate pros -- to me they will always be symbols of the age of Quaaludes, Jimmy Carter, and Album Rock on FM. The 1970s: a bad time in my life; a bad time in America's history.

PS - Mick Fleetwood is not only one of the few drummers who ever headlined his own rock group, he is also one of the world's biggest Trekkies. He even appeared (as an alien) in an episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation. Flaccid '70s relic or not, you gotta give the man points for that.

As Chief Dan George famously said, "She float like butterfly and stink like pee".

I was always amazed at Lindsay Buckingham's technique with the lead guitar. No picks.

AHH, but what I wouldn't give to see such a video with Janis Joplin singing "Ball and Chain".
I like Stevie OK, but...

Doesn't sound any better now than it did back then, when I was stoned.

With you B Lewis, SoCal elevator music then and now. Could use the songs to sell Subaru or Viagra.

I saw FM at the Phila Rectum back in 75. I was more a King Crimson kind of follower, but went to the show at my girlfriend's insistence. For whatever the reason - second hand high? - Stevie rocked my world that night. Twirling round in her black crepe cape. Oh my, good times. Dreams unwind...

The loveliest thing about 1976 was being 19 years old and in love. Everything was great. Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder -- so many others. So it was a little pop. I miss melodic music with words you could hear. I can't imagine, for example, being a kid today and looking back on hip hop or the filthy language of rap with the same fondness. But I guess...

The sun slid like a greased banana behind the Santa Monica Mountains. The big Harley roared threats. A cherry red 57 Chevy rag top hugged the shoulder. One tire shredded. I pulled off the hard top and idled behind the Chevy. She opened the door like she opened her legs. One at a time.

A platform suede boot showed itself. Then gleaming blond hair. She stood. Turned. Took her time. Her mouth a Cupid’s bow that said, “Kiss me, handsome.” I said, “You’re not as tall as you look, half-pint, but your legs go all the way to the ground.” She said, “Climb in.” I said, “I’d rather climb on.” She said, “We can play prepositions all day. Or, you can spend the night with Stevie.” I said, “I’m not gay, buddy. Stevie. Ha!” I tipped my helmet and road away. Dumbass.

Nah. I'll take Diana Rigg as she was in the Avengers. Yeah, she's old enough to be my mother. But even though she got .... um, matronly .... in later years, she still had a certain pizazz.

My two cents' worth.

I am so grateful that your post reminded me to look on the net for my long lost (hurricanes) audio.

Fleetwood Mac Mk75 were something. Will there ever be another group with three lead singer/songwriters of that level of talent again? And would there be another group that could keep the group together despite marriages breaking up, cocaine by the kilo and all of the other temptations of the late 1970s?

Mick Fleetwood must be a hell of a bandleader. And he got to bang Stevie, for a while.

Posted by Gordon at August 18, 2016 2:48 AM

Not the best of recordings. Buckingham and the Diva were still cool at that point, I guess. I saw them live around that time, and they really tore it up. They were immensely popular. Doesn't seem like forty years ago, now...
