The Arctic Chill in LA

Seriously, it was so cold the other day, I had to wear my thermal flip-flops.

Anybody who says that it can't get cold in Southern California has never spent a January night in the high desert. I did a year at Edwards AFB back in the late sixties guarding nuclear weapons, and believe me things could get downright frosty. It was not the temperature as much as the wind, which never dropped below 25 mph. That same wind in the summer would melt a spit shine off of a govt issue combat boot in fifteen minutes. I don't mean that metaphorically. After Edwards, Vietnam seemed downright inviting.

I once was in L.A during one of their cold snaps. About sunrise I climb out of the truck and made my way inside the warehouse to use the bathroom. Being from "back east" the 50 degree morning temp wasn't an issue. As I stood at the facility one of the employees walked in and gasped that I forgot my winter coat. The local guy was dressed for a walk around the North Pole.

The L.A. locals, likewise, freak out about the smallest drizzle. L.A. freeways are grooved. They could serve as high speed runways they shed water so well. One trip I was in LA and it was "storming". The rain wasn't falling fast enough to warrant intermittent wiper speed. Cars were driving about 30 MPH on the Freeway.

Oh the humanity!

That was about the funniest damn thing I've seen in a while....

If you're looking for cold and snow in California, you gotta go to someplace like Truckee or Tahoe. Even then, I'm pretty sure it gets nowhere near as cold in those places as it does in the midwest.
