Why I don't care how much the MSM slags Christie.

Not to worry, Christie is a republican and I don't think the White House will see a republican president for a while. The only thing that Christie has going for him is that he is further to the left and more liberal than McCain and Romney. That seems to make the big government, big spending, less freedom republican voters very happy.

Liked the Klavan piece, but I don't understand how he feels that isn't a libertarian argument. When does humanity obtain is the central libertarian issue. Until the pro-life movement starts framing this as a civil rights issue they are doomed to failure.

How can you question if a fetus is human? Take a look at an ultra sound image. Any questions? Can an acorn grow into other than a tree? And the viability question is equally specious. We keep alive many who not "viable." (see hospice care). Abortionists, get some better arguments and I will listen. You have the "choice" to not fornicate, use birth control, give up for adoption, keep and raise the child, isn't that enough choice?

My fingernails and hair are human, but they aren't human beings. A sperm and an egg are human, but they aren't human beings. A fertilized egg isn't a human being in most folks opinions, but a fetus the moment before it is born is.

The central question to the abortion issue is when does an egg become a human being?

And you probably don't care, but as soon as you use the word "fornicate" you have become a caricature and lost the argument.

I supported a right to abort unquestioningly in the '70s. My stance has evolved in the ensuing years but at this point I still support a woman's right to abortion on demand in the first trimester. I wouldn't do it myself if I was a woman but if someone else wants to do it that's their business, not mine. However, we know that a viable premature birth has taken place as early as 22 weeks (21 weeks, 5 days) so without a doubt the fetus is no longer just a fetus; it's a human being with just as much right to life as you and I. And the argument that because the baby is inside of the mother means it's her business and nobody elses and she has a right to do what she wants with it doesn't hold water either. The Mexicans have a saying I heard in a totally different context but the idea applies here as well. They say, 'look, if I stick my finger in your ass, whose finger is it, yours or mine?' The answer is it's mine. Just because it's in your ass doesn't mean you own it. Same thing with a pregnant woman. Just because she has a baby inside her body doesn't mean she has a right to abuse it, certainly by the time it has achieved viability. So, there's no doubt in my mind that third trimester abortion is murder. But for me, the question isn't even one of viability. It's really a question of when is the baby well enough developed to feel a sense of horror as it' being killed. I don't know the answer to that but it's certainly well before viability is reached. If I had my way I'd outlaw abortion after the first trimester except in very extreme cases.
