Comments: 100 Items to Disappear First

Preppers are the most narcissistic bastards on planet Earth. They are city people who move to the country and do everything they can to instigate Armageddon so they can say, "See, I was right."

I used to think hoarding was the way to go. Then I had a conversation with an Amish friend of mine. It was shortly after some city slicker had visited his farm and told him how things were going to hell in the big city. He further explained to the Amish man that when it all hit the fan, the starving hoards from the city would look for food in Amish country. I said, "What are you going to, Abe, when these hoards move through this settlement?" His answer, "Why, we'll feed them, of course."

And that's exactly what we'll do out here in the country. We'll feed folks, but they'll work for their food, just the same way we do. There will be plenty to go around, but you'll have to get off your ass and help.

Every year in the spring, the tornadoes knock power out where we are and we don't need a f#$%ing generator. In fact, tornado season is the only time the damn neighbors will turn off the televisions and come outside and talk to you. When I first moved out to our area, that spring I took a drive to see where the power line had gone down and you never saw so many people gathered around grills drinking beer and having a good time.

Frankly, I'm REALLY looking forward to when the excrement finally hits the oscillating blades. Then we can all be neighbors again.

That sounds so nice but when the new folks come out with guns and just help themselves to whatever they want and screw working for it, that wears thin fast.

The next crowd don't get to join the BBQ.

Let me guess, Vermont Woodchuck, you've got a diesel generator?

"73. Shaving supplies (razors & creams, talc, after shave)"

I’m not shaving in the Barackocalypse.

"We'll feed folks, but they'll work for their food..."

Half the country isn't doing that now and you think they'll become MORE civilized after the excrement starts flying? Good luck.

Anonymous (and from your comment I see why you don't want to be known) your outlook and anticipation of the way things will be when there is no law and order and hungry mobs kill each other for Cheeze Whiz is rather naïve.

the picture you paint, "we'll all be neighbors" is foolish. It sounds good and thinking it feels all warm and fuzzy but it will not happen. Jesus advised we turn the other cheek and I won't do that. I only have two cheeks and Jesus did not tell us to be doormats. In fact, when some of the apostles were making ready to go out to another area Jesus advised them, get a sword. If you have to, sell your cloak but get a sword.

The best way to reply to brute force and raping pillaging robbing mobs is with superior force. It is the only language they will understand.

OK, chasmatic, et al, so whatcha gonna do when the "hoards coming out of the cities" are neither thugs nor zombies, but just simple poor men with their wives and children looking for food and work.

Has it every occurred to anyone that they whole Prepper BS is just another form of Marxist class warfare? That's exactly why Hollywood hails the Prepper with their own TV shows. Think about it.

I know several Preppers here in our locale (they come to farmers market and buy shit from me). They cannot open their mouths without telling me how 1) Armageddon is staring us in the face and 2) they have all the answers when they don't really know shit about living off the land. Living off the land ain't for real, until you've done it to do it for real and not just to have something to blog about.

Buy yourself a damn gun; buy yourself a damn tractor; buy yourself a damn chainsaw; buy yourself a damn generator IF you need them regularly and for a purpose. But, if you are buying all this shit because you are waiting for civilization to fall and not because you lead a productive life helping others, then you ARE PART OF THE FUCKING PROBLEM.

I sure ain't a "Prepper", but when we got a 3-foot heavy, wet snowfall here in Western SD last 4 October, and power went out for 72 hours, I was damn glad I had my generator and a whole-house hookup so that I didn't lose hundreds of dollars' worth of elk, bison, and seafood in my freezer. (BTW, I'm not saving that food for a societal implosion, either.) We even had neighbors over and cooked some meals for them. I learned a long time ago, in a wholly different part of the country, that having a generator (and spare fuel) is a good idea. Period. And generators were indeed impossible to buy hereabouts after that storm.

Anon: Relax yourself. The cloak of sanctimony does not sit well on your shoulders and profanity does not help. The intent of my comment was not to make you appear foolish but to impart some advice to keep you and yours safe. The threat of looters and marauders is real and plans should be in place to protect yourself and family, friends &c. You are correct, many of the folks fleeing the chaos of large urban areas will be harmless and innocent. I am also correct, many of the folks will be intent on doing harm to anyone they come across. I would rather be prepared to defend myself and not need to than be all open arms trusting and get hurt or killed or worse.

I have seen enough examples of human nature where the cruelty and inhumanity scared me.

Another asswipe that thinks it knows better than me how to run my life, while neglecting it's own. We got something out here in the woods for ya, come out and get it.

I'm converting my Troybilt 5550 generator to propane this summer and we already have a 2000gal tank backing up our solar array. It'll come in handy for running my automatic reloader when the power goes out for good.

Anon is picking at, one of the several putative successful strategies to survive a societal disordering. The rule #1, is survival. 1. Hunker down in a difficult to find and approach location and shoot anybody that comes close. Wait for the great dying and disorder to subside, then re-emerge. Hiding will be easier than attempting to rejoin a community afterwards, where no one trusts strangers.

2. Form, grow, and federate a self-defense and support community from within the chaos. Try to keep it civilized, but you will also be shooting or turning away a lot of hungry desperate unfortunates, along with the eviloids. Trust will be in short supply.

3. At the outset be a contributing member in good standing (be part of the web of trust) of a community with strong common ties and mores, and that has a defensible perimeter, and something more to live for than just survival.

All of these are very bad juju, if the great disordering comes. Anon is just thinking that #3 provides the best chance of survival.

Fleming: that's a good summary. I am going with #2 as my primary strategy. #1 and #3 can be blended in with discretion.
