In less that 24 hours it is official...

I wouldn't say the feel good story of the day so much as the least threatening and depressing. Though sad, it was his choice.
Not to belittle anybody's death, but if you are a Syrian or Iraqi Christian or a Yezidi(sp?) stranded in ISIS controlled territory, you have far more to worry and be depressed about.

It was said with heavily sardonic overtones.

I still (and will) miss Jonathan Winters more.

Hear hear. Even the evening news in the Netherlands spend more time having a - now deceased - actor/junky yell "Good Morning Vietnam" than they would spend on a combat death of a Dutch soldier. A pox on the media.

Robin Williams

President Obama: He touched us all

Was Robin Williams, Gay?

His demise saddened me-not because he was so great-but perhaps because he seemed human and somewhat vulnerable, though he tried to cover it up with excess bravado.

Beyond that, all the great "friends in the industry" who could not have given a fuck and ignored him for three weeks (or longer), shut up we don't care about your pointless lives and desire to be quoted. You ignored him in his time of need.

And then again lets be clear what killed him, feminism, pure and simple. He was kind and gentle enough to submit to the crazy edicts of Californian courts, where crazy women claim half of all past and future earnings-how can that be right? So well done bitches, you killed another good man.

"And then again lets be clear what killed him, feminism, pure and simple."

I'll pray for you. You're obviously a very sick man.

As was Williams. He had bipolar disorder, very high suicide rate among people with that disease. His death is sad but not surprising.

Posted by HT at August 12, 2014 3:32 PM

In the USA, we call it being depressed.

In Finland, they call it being normal.

'Course, the suicide rate is higher there ...

Never cared much for the dood, seemed a little *off* if you know what I mean.

He had his moments but all in all he was just weerd.

Why doesn't someone invent a browser or search engine that would either

a) not show links to any subject you put on a "Yes, I know that, dammit!" list, or

b) not show links to any article that contains no substantively new information beyond a previously read article.

Yes I am aware that C++ (etc.) lacks a "substantively not equal" operator, but I can fix that! *%#@&$!!=

There.

I cannot thank you enough for this post.

Shh, don't tell on me...but yeah...

It's a choice. Nobody forces you to watch 47 channels of cable TV news, surf news sites, blogs, RSS feeds, Twitter, and all the other sources of what the culture is talking about.

Instead, you could spend your precious time in this vale of tears making your own culture. Or visiting a lonely old person, or hospital patients, or some young people looking for direction. Meeting new people, trying to make your home and neighborhood a better place. Sharing the love of God with someone who doesn't realize that their soul aches to know and love Him.

Or you can kvetch about the coverage, or troll for deranged comments about the troubles of the world.

One episode of The Crazy Ones damned near made me suicidal. I can't begin to imagine what doing a whole season would have felt like.

Roger Rabbit:
Not Angelo. He'd never turn me in.

Eddie Valiant:
Why? Because you made him laugh?

Roger Rabbit:
That's right! A laugh can be a very powerful thing. Why, sometimes in life, it's the only weapon we have.

...And that's why. If you make enough people laugh, and Robin Williams was doing so long after his cocaine-boosted supernova, any viewing conjures up lots of positive associations. Yeah, you're dead, but then they play the clips, and triggered feelings supersede story content.

There's a valuable lesson there for conservatives. If they'll learn it.

Righty-O, Joe! Thanks for that insight.

Meh, he was a funny guy that made some good movies, but that's what he was. A funny guy, not some saint, not some grant artiste, not a cultural icon, and certainly not a hero.

However I suspect his suicide frightens and touches these egotistical entertainment types in a place they are undone by, so it matters more to them.

Posted by Christopher Taylor at August 13, 2014 6:16 PM

Let me see if I understand: he was a drug addict and psycho-socially debilitated, bipolar or some other such disorder;
a comedian that usually made people laugh; a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party and perhaps one of the most liberal actors in Hollywood; an atheist.
And we mourn his passing like he was somebody significant?

Posted by chasmatic at August 13, 2014 8:39 PM

Chasmatic. I'll guarantee you, Mr. Williams isn't an atheist any more. Not even a little bit so.
