Comments: My question is: does anyone ever “understand” evil?

The need for understanding is rooted firmly in the Leftist's need to avoid making a judgement. After all, the French say "To understand all is to forgive all." And after all, they're French.

The bottom-line message of Cultural Marxism is "Whatever. I don't want to be responsible."

The only purpose to understanding evil is to find ways to eradicate it, like you would a disease.

This should have been the thought behind Gitmo - capture, isolate, and study the mindset of the evil that emanates from Islam, and determine if it is a subset of the faith, or the underlying virus that will eventually consume all of the adherents.

Otherwise, you quarantine, starve, and destroy it as you would any pathogen. Negotiations with Ebola, HIV, Islamists and Progressives are equally fruitless because each will destroy you as they pursue the path their DNA was designed to follow.

One needs two words to describe evil: Harry Reid.
