How many here remember a time when that thing in the picture would have been killed right on the spot, or, if luck was in it's favor, caged for life?

Not only are there still hippies among us, many of them are THE SAME ONES.
Think that over for a minute. Try to imagine embracing a "lifestyle" in your 20's and then never learning anything that made you expand your views. Ever. I managed to avoid the reality that they were still with us for decades, by the simple expedient of trying to earn a living, and living in, believe it or not, San Francisco - which is for all its faults a very fast track, due to the competitive realities of much of the world wishing to live in such a beautiful place. Very few hippies after about the middle '70s.
Since much of me collapsed in the early part of this century I've found myself living in Sonoma county,The Leftmost County In America (® The Congressional Record, 2004.) They're still here, having lemminged "up to the country" in the late '60s and '70s. I've had numerous occasions to discuss the "Whatever else, we stopped the war in Vietnam" claim, although it thinned out pretty quick once it got around that my response was "And all it took was the lives of 2 million Cambodians."
They also still ask what my sign is, giving me the opportunity to dust off all my old favorites, the most common of which seems to be "No Left Turn." And they don't get it, either.
I gotta get outta here. It's making me stupid.

Maybe old WA state hippies are different. I are one, and I don't know any that are that stupid.

My uncle Letsgo, he never had a beard or wore his hair long. The strongest drug he ever did was Pabst Blue Ribbon. he was fond of saying:

Yup. What's funniest is knowing one of those guys for a few decades and remembering what a loser he was then, and watching him now as a Loser With Gravitas.
