We sold a lot of my mother's jewelry after she died, and got pretty good money for the stuff we sent to auction. The big diamond ring, which was neither a wedding nor engagement ring that mom inherited from my grandmother went to my sister-in-law. Mom's engagement ring, which was set with several small diamonds, went to my second daughter who wears it as her own engagement ring (She has since been married).

My wife's wedding ring set cost $100 new, in 1984. I swore I'd get her a better set on our 20th anniversary but when we got there she said not to - it's a waste of money. She was right and that's why I keep her around.
