Comments: Circling the earth aboard Friendship 7 in 1962, John Glenn had an odd encounter:

Any memories of John Glenn, the 'hero' astronaut were erased for me, when he later sat on a senate panel chaired by Fred Thompson investigating irregularities in the 1996 presidential campaign. He single-handedly scuttled the investigation. Why? For a ride on the space shuttle. There was no viable reason for an old man to go into space 'just for a ride', with no specific task or mission, and at tax payers expense. He became for me, just another crooked democrat at that point.
