By today's standards JFK would be considered a conservative.

In JFK's day a whole lot of Democrats were conservative. A whole lot of Democrats disliked FDR's machinations, but at that time Republicans were strictly big business-banks-Wall Street etc. (except in parts of New England as I understand it). People like us (very small neighborhood business) had nothing in common with the Republican party. Probably 90% of the country today (everyone under the age of 75) has no idea of what it was like back then.
