Comments: Sparking the Diapause: Zookeepers Jedi Mind Tricked This Adorable Baby Tortoise to Get It to Hatch

Turtles is my weak point. Since 1991 I have saved over 900 and I have documented every one. Usually in the spring when it warms up and they come out of their winter lairs. I stop right in the middle of the road and grab em, bring em back here to the estancia and let em go down by the stream. I measure them, check the gender, take a picture or 2 and write it all up, then down to the stream. I've had 3 turtles in the truck at one time, 2 Boxes in the cab and a snapper in the bed. I've been late to appt's because of turtles. I stopped along the road once and ran back about 100' to grab a large Paint off the centerline just to witness an asshole run right over it in a large truck right before my eyes. I shoulda pulled my piece and blowed a tire off.... Males have a concave belly, females are flat or convex. Counting the plates does not reveal the age, which is probably more than you think. The smallest turtle I have saved was 3/4" dia and the largest was 28". I have not seen 1 turtle yet this year and that is disturbing.
