This reads like a version CS Lewis' "Screwtape Hell" where The Demons purpose is to make a soul an 'Extension of itself - no more capable of independent thought than an arm or a leg.
Chilling.
The trouble with purposeful manipulation of using psychology to reach your goal - instead of the customers goal - is that it is really 'social warfare': ESPECIALLY if the customer is not AWARE of it being used.
Once the customer is are of being gamed, they will adjust accordingly and then a new form of manipulation is required to trick them into buying 'stuff'. This will go on and on until the customer finally says "I'm sick of buying from Jerks".
Then it is over.
Our civilization has not reached that point yet, but the level of 'ick' is rising.

I think for all of us,the world starts filling up with assholes around the time we hit 40 or so, and is filled to the brim by the time we hit 75 or 80. That's how it worked for me.
