When I lived in the UK 35 years ago, this sort of behavior (behaviour) just didn't happen. There was a strong social sanction against it. One could claim that Europeans drank alcohol to enhance their experience while Americans drank to get drunk.

Things changed. Perhaps we can blame it on Diana.
