The Aztecs were so barbarous it is a wonder they ever managed to rule Central Mexico. In the earliest encounters with these new interlopers, other Mexican tribes even tried to exterminate them, which was only a natural act of self-preservation. But, in the end, the Aztecs (the "Mexica") prevailed.
But their barbarity was their undoing. A few hundred conquistadors with horses, 3-round-a-minute match-locks, some cannon and crossbows weren't going to overcome swarms of Aztec warriors, but for the fact they had willing Indian allies among the subjugated tribes. The Aztecs/Mexica were hated, and suffered a fate they deserved.
It is ironic and mendacious that our southern neighbors and their multi-million advance party both celebrate the Aztecs, and claim the American Southwest as the ancestral home of this barbarous tribe. If the Aztecs were actually from "Azatlan," they sure didn't stay, for whatever reasons.
