Democracy is Coming: "It's coming to America first, / the cradle of the best and of the worst. / It's here they got the range / and the machinery for change / and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. "

Democracy is OK if the demos is virtuous and capable.
When the American continues to show he is the Americant, then s/he will be replaced by those more negating.
Whoa to our self-made woe. Teach the children well.

Never cared much for poetry unless it humorous, like a limerick. Cohen, dead Angelou, dead Pound, etc., all write nonsensical crap that uses too many words, strains to rhyme and seldom says what they're attempting to say.

Every time I read this stuff I recall the scene in "A River Runs Through It" where young Normal MacLean's father, a minister, is assisting him with his writing skills. Norman submits his paragraph and dad's red pencil goes to work. "Shorter...do it over"; and that occurs until Norman get's it and then dad tells him to throw it in the trash.

These "poets" should have studied under the Reverend MacLean.

Jack, you just don't understand. Reading and enjoying poetry is virtue signaling. You are obviously not with the "in" crowd. If you don't like poetry than fake it. If you are not sincere it will show so learn to fake sincerity as well. Once you master this buy a tweed jacket and a pipe and you are now an intellectual qualified to tell the rest of us where we went wrong and be a never Trumper.

Democracy is coming... and we're going to get it good and hard. The whole song is a warning.

What's with all the poetry haters? Moderns!
“It seems to me appropriate, almost inevitable, that when that great Imagination which in the beginning, for Its own delight and for the delight of men and angels and (in their proper mode) of beasts, had invented and formed the whole world of Nature, submitted to express Itself in human speech, that speech should be poetry. For poetry too is a little incarnation, giving body to what had been before invisible and inaudible.” ~C.S. Lewis, Reflections on the Psalms

There are poets and then there are poets. Leonard Cohen is a poet.

PS Wouldn't you know it?
