I grew up just North of Boston in the 40's and 50'. Every school year one or two or three immigrant children would be introduced to the class as new students from (Germany, Estonia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Italy, etc.) and that they didn't speak English so please help them learn. Three months later they were speaking English and by the end of the year they spoke English like they had been born here. Some of them were friends and I visited their homes and often their parents didn't speak English for a few years and their grandparents never learned English. That seemed to be the norm. But except for the grandparents everyone wanted to learn and did learn and were better for it. The school didn't hire someone who spoke Slovak or Polish and the children learned English all the faster because of that.

I grew up in Western New York and it was made up largely of long assimilated immigrants, mostly Italian and Polish.
Now you have Arab and Somali rabble maddogging you if you look at them crosswise. This is liberal and liberal Christian asininity writ large. Thanks, Obama.

One of the big problems with a school district that plays the multi-lingual game are the translators. Yes, they're required to hire them. The trouble is that most are pretty ignorant to begin with and can't even begin to translate terms in science classes because THEY'RE science illiterates to begin with. Teach the kids English first and everybody benefits. Screw the peer group nonsense. Create learning pools around a subject, not an age range.

I grew up in a multi-ethnic neighborhood in Detroit, and when I was about 5 or 6, a family from Poland moved in across the street. They had a daughter my age and a younger son, neither of whom spoke English. My parents were delighted, because they thought by befriending them, I'd remember some Polish that I'd already forgotten (learned it as a baby/toddler, mostly from my immigrant grandparents). Didn't work out that way. Between me, school, and the rest of the neighborhood kids, both of them were speaking fluent English within a year. They didn't even speak with an accent. And I'd call that a success story.
