Something Wonderful: Counting My Blessings

Interesting commentary on the song. I kind of feel that way too about the America of my childhood, late 50s and pre revolution 60s.

When I was a kid in the late '40s one of my chores was to help with the dinner dishes. So every week night I'd be at the sink drying as my mother washed and we would tune in to a short radio program with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. Together they would sing three or four songs and trade witty patter. It was the beginning of my musical education. In my late teens I came across an LP of Clooney singing the Ellington songbook. Sixty years later I still have that LP and I'm going to put it on the turntable as soon I start the breakfast dishes.

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite movies. Diana Krall does a nice version, too.

There's an old hymn:

When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost;
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Several simple verses long, sing it aloud and turn your mind over, regardless how out of tune your voice and heart may have been.

The hope of the Hymn, "I heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is such a song that wondered if we'd ever sing of the good again. Grand story behind that hymn, as well.

"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep.
The wrong shall fail
The right prevail
With peace on Earth, good will to men."

Just got done watching the full movie. An annual tradition and we enjoy the reference to WW II. Also, it's just plain fun.
