The Paris Metro is not a place for the naive or faint-hearted. I saw one crime committed there in broad daylight, and it's a hangout for all sorts of sketchy characters. I saw a Frenchwoman, who probably should have known better, carrying her coat over her arm, and a teenage girl, probably a gypsy, grabbed it from her and ran off. This was in 2002. I doubt it's improved since then.
