Sounds like my dad's funeral...except we long ago forgave him. And by the time he died, he was very beloved by his many piano fans and clients. Reconcile while you can. It's always for the best.

I'm going through this now with a cantankerous (but, fortunately, not evil) older relative. Maybe he'll pull through again, maybe he won't. He's kicked the Reaper in the crotch a couple of times already, but that's only bought him a reprieve.

Reconciliation with your own is only possible if you've found healing elsewhere first, for one's own monstrous, but less obvious, transgressions. I've killed a spirit with a word, I've snuffed a dream with a snort, I've misjudged, prejudged, and written off people better than I for sheer blinded pride.
Still, loved the obit for its honest catharsis.

My father in law was one of the meanest men I've ever met. The saddest thing about his funeral was knowing that none of us will ever get the chance to tell him off. I hope this obit really does bring this family some relief.

If he died with a satisfied mind, that's all that matters. The rest of them can take a hike. (Yeah, I'm probably on of them.)
