A great piece of writing and well worth re-posting. My son is going into the Marines in a few months. My nephew is in there. For whatever reasons, they've aspired to duty and excellence and total committment. I was Army, volunteer; foreign duty, no combat. The daughter is going Navy. I'm proud beyond words - my offspring are not mush mush free riding born lucky people. Those who did not and could are undeniably second rate Americans and they know it in their hearts.
I've espoused the legitimate contempt veterans often justifiably have for those who did not serve.
When our only child, our son, turned 18 and was required to register for the draft I told him I would chain him to a tree before I'd see him victimized by the military.
I did my 4 years, and learned many things, most it not useful. It was the first time I seen the malevolent face of the US gov't.
Two million Iraqis murdered, six trillion dollars pissed Way. How depraved do you have to be to allow your child to join the D.C. murder machine?
