As a matter of fact, the old original Pledge of Allegiance did NOT contain the words, "under God." That phrase was added relatively recently -- can't tell you exactly when, although it should be feasible to research this.
"Under God" was inserted, I believe, as a bit of Cold War spin, since our enemies were then the godless atheistic Communists. Of course, our current enemies are a bunch of religious wackos, so maybe we should pull "under God" to show that we're NOT religious wackos.
