The Sacrifice and the Reckoning: The Event

My God, Gerard. How can you see this and remain sane? Just to read it is horrifying. To be able to imagine it first before putting it down is amazing.

It certainly needs saying. One can only hope similar visions are in the heads of those who are supposed to provide our security.

Today is my 55th birthday and Gerard, you have given me, in this essay, the most valuable gift I've received in some years: a tool for digging heads out of the sand.

Thanks so much for this brilliant work, and for stewarding God's gift with such care. This is what blogging can be.

Oh, yes, happy birthday. Many more for you and for all of us, every one.

Gerard, very compelling read. I'm including a link to a blast simulator that uses Google Maps. I set the blast radius at the intersection you used. The default blast strength is 100 kilotons, but can be changed.

Sorry, Tom. It had to be someone's city. If it is any comfort I'll be about 1,000 miles away on Saturday. Not that that would make a lot of difference in the long run.

What I wonder though is why al-Qaeda hasn't pulled something like this off yet. I'm sure increased security since 9-11 and the distractions in Afghanistan and Iraq have helped, but still...

Do they lack the skills and resources or have they thought it through--especially in the light 9-11--that the American retaliation would likely be so devastating (see GVL's part 2...) that even they prefer to keep their terrorism in the car bomb range?

Posted by Jack Trainor at August 2, 2005 6:50 PM

Wow.

What is most frightening is that it's so plausible.

Posted by Patricia at August 2, 2005 7:13 PM

Definitely hits home.

A ground burst results in tons of fallout. What are the prevailing winds that day. It could leave a massive radiation footprint over the entire southwest. Say goodbye to livable conditions for a few weeks for survivors in outlying areas.

Maybe fallout shelters will make a comeback.

Joseph Farah, who heads the G2 online intelligence service, says that the terrorists have already smuggled nukes into the U.S. and are just waiting for an appropriately symbolic time to strike:

"Again, according to captured documents and captured al-Qaida leaders -- and some defectors -- the plans are to detonate multiple nuclear weapons in major U.S. cities -- either all at once or over a period of days. You can guess most of the prime targets -- New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. The only surprise, according to my sources, is that al-Qaida's list is not based on the cities with the most population. The list is based on where most American Jews live."

Posted by Philomathean at August 3, 2005 7:54 AM

Should this come to pass, the internment of the Japanese will be a tea party in comparison. There won't be a mosque left standing in the US, and any apologist for the Muslims will probably be summarily arrested if not killed.

THEN, everybody that thought glassifying the Middle East was the solution will get their wish. This is a scenario where MAD doesn't work, because as long as the infidel dies, the Islamikazes will get to the afterlife. What's worse they don't care if we hold their civilians hostage to their behavior. In fact, they would just as soon see the civilians die, because they are not pure.

If this occurs, religious toleration will go out the window in this country, and Islam will be declared illegal and persecuted out of existence. And because people in rage and grief tend not to make fine judgements, anyone with brown or black skin will be at great risk of their lives and freedom.

Posted by Bill at August 3, 2005 10:26 AM

You're not scared enough, Gerard.

What were you doing in 1956 and 1957?

My dad was sending us kids around to warn all the neighborhood kids not to eat the snow, some of those winter days (he ran a fan pulling air through an ordinary filter paper, and checked the radiation every day, so knew when the fallout clouds had drifted over from Nevada to our little southern town).

Rain? Don't drink the milk for a few weeks.
Snow? Don't eat the snow, either.

I'm not going to write down where the terrorists would put the bomb instead of where you describe, to create fallout that would be an order or two of magnitude worse, but it's public information.

I'm not going to write down what common material to wrap around a bomb, to make it a doomsday device spreading fallout that will stay dangerous for years instead of weeks, but it's public knowledge. They made a movie ....

Or read Philip Wylie in his blacker moods, from the 1950s.

Fifty years ago, this was news. Where the HELL was everyone back then ....

Wylie, and others, for those who missed this issue the first time around:

But think ahead and beware, while fearing the atomic bomb fallen in the wrong hands.

The tools being created now for surveillance and control, for homeland defense, will in fifty more years also have fallen into other hands and be used for other purposes.

What sanity is there in building tools that when they do pass into other hands -- as they always do -- they can threaten the whole world?

"... only a madman would give a loaded revolver to an idiot." -- Frederic Brown, "The Weapon"

"People ask me to predict the future, when all I want to do is prevent it.... Predicting the future is much too easy, .... predict more of the same. To hell with more. I want better."

Pakistan was the only source for an islamic bomb, freely given. It is doubtful if any significant danger continues to exist from that source. It appears that the General had a reading from the Good Book. The former Soviet Union remains a danger for misappropriated tech, radioactives and an actual weapon. With the number of intelligence agencies watching the illegal weapons trade and "no questions asked" cash rewards, this is an unlikely source. For a number of reasons, i.e., nuclear fingerprinting etal, sale of radioactives by someone like the French is unlikely as they would be ID'd as the source post explosion - a terminal identification. Iran and the Arabic countries remain the most likely source for a completed device or the necessary radioactives.
Note that "dancing in the streets" will undoubtedly also be a terminal act. The last enemy who killed our women and children was the American Indian - regret it or not, they remain only as an endangered species.

Posted by FastNed at August 4, 2005 7:44 AM

>an unlikely source

Proof of concept, however, exists. One such attempt has been stopped. The only one?

From: http://www.roadtechs.com/rpchron.htm

"1994 (Dec) The largest amount of smuggled nuclear-weapon usable material discovered to date was found in mid-December ... two simple, unlined metal canisters, labeled in Cyrillic script... The take was 2.7 kilograms of enriched uranium-about 87.7 percent uranium 235."

my 1st reaction to this was to be amazed at the quality of the writing. On further review, I am depressed by the simple plausibility of the scenario.

I urgently want to read the next part of this, if only because Iran, Saudi, Syria et al. ALREADY deserve what's coming in your story.

Pardon me. Your most-likely-case extrapolation. Because I'm afraid this IS what's most likely to happen. Does Bush think he can't do anything to stop it UNTIL they nuke us? If he does, perhaps he's right.

Posted by Steve Johnson at August 5, 2005 9:21 AM

John Bolton is the appropriate ambassador to the UN for times like this. Protecting american interests, period. Nothing else.

Is this scenario inevitable? It seems to be a simple extrapolation of Al Qaida's activities through the Clinton years into September 2001. Bush's spoiling operations in Afghanistan and Iraq have pushed the timetable back a bit, but as long as the Saudi donors are raking in the oil revenues, Al Qaida is in business.

Perhaps forbidding all muslim students from taking courses in engineering, science, physics, electronics, and other technical areas would be a wise move. Sure, they can take such courses in muslim countries, but why help them learn how to kill us more efficiently?

Posted by Bill Flossey at August 5, 2005 12:31 PM

Absent a significant attack on American soil, Bush's current operations are running at about the limit of current American political will.

A second significant attack will remove all limits on that will.

I agree with Vanderleun. There is insufficient political will to do any more than what the President is presently doing. With Saddam being one of the worse modern tyrants and violations of the 1991 cease fire clearly documented, almost half of Americans are disapproving of the Iraq War and few are willing to sacrifice for the GWOT. I don’t see President Bush attacking Iran to stop their acknowledged intent to bomb Israel with nuclear weapons much less attack a country or area for a supposed future attack on the US. Actually, I’m more concerned about a biological attack. The small anthrax attack showed what havoc a large scale attack would cause. I doubt we would attack anyone, since the source would be very difficult to pinpoint. Anyway, many here and abroad would believe that Bush did it to increase his control over America and allow more foreign adventures

Posted by Al Reasin at August 8, 2005 9:25 PM

I'm not sure you are correct about Lead shielding a nuke from detection. It works with 1950's technology, but there are better things out there today. IIRC, what is used on container ships is a gravity device that basicly looks for the extra mass of the fissile material. Since that is many times lead, the lead doesn't hide the fissile material. Now I seriously doubt that microgravity detection equipment is used on every truck entering America. I don't think it is even used on every cargo ship. But it can be used on a city by flying a grid pattern over the city. So I doubt the weapons already here scenario is plausable.
Second, the Russian nukes stolen in 91 were at the very end of their shelf life then. The explosive used in the shaped charges that initiate the implosion deteriorate over time. US devices are recycled on a 12 year schedule, AFAIK. The Soviets didn't have nearly as good quality control as the US. So any old soviet nuke will produce a fizzle at best (worst?). Plus they were designed to break the keel of a US aircraft carrier and had to fit in a 21" torpedo. So they are only 20 or kilotons, new. Still not a good thing. The pits could be extracted and the device rebuilt, but that requires the sort of expertise that isn't easy to come by. I'll bet there are less then two dozen humans on this planet that can assemble an implosion device. Then there is the fact that the pit( fissile core of a device) is VERY posionous. Get within a meter of a naked pit and you are a dead man. It requires specialized equipment to handle the pit and explosives during asssembly. Then there is the problem of the timing devices. The Shaped charges ( over 30 in most designs) have to detonate with 1x10-23E of each other. Clocks that will split a second into -23E parts are NOT picked up at Radio Shack.
Having gone thru all the good news, let me say that a nuclear event in America is inevitable. Technical problems can be over come by Technicians, that is what they do.
If I was planning the job, I would target the Houston Chemical Complex. The Houston Waterway connects to the Gulf which makes Houston one of the worlds busiest ports. It goes right past 1/3 of Americas refining capacity. Houston is America's 4th largest City, Center of the US Petroleum industry and an economic center in it's own right. It also is in President Bushes home state.
Politically, I'm not sure an event in a red state would bother the MSM. Nuke New York and it's war. Let Hollywood see the pika-dan and it's war. But a target in fly-over America will just be gasped at in the blue states.
When Gore challenged the Florida election results, he started the wedge that is splitting America in two. No, the real danger is the Chinese using Pakistan, Iran and N. Korea as cover for their own device. Or the Tyrant in Pakistan getting hit and the Taliban taking over Pakistan. The Chinese will do it if they think they can get away with it, but the Islamists don't care if they get nuked back or not. Who actually thinks a death threat will stop a suicide bomber?
The quick and dirty soultion is to nuke the Iranian sites. All that we know about.
President Bush and Sharon are waiting for the other to do it. That is why I hope Bibi gets elected. Bibi has big brass ones. He'll turn all the known Iranian sites in glassy craters and worry about the rest later.

Posted by stehpinkeln at August 10, 2005 8:41 PM

Good read, and unfortunately highly possible. One thing worse would be a high-altitude nuke. One well-place airburst would fry every peice of electronics in the US stopping ALL commerce. We would have no power, water, transportation, health care, no military or police control, etc. In just a few days people would be dying of thirst. That would be followed by starvation and rampant disease. The ensuing panic would spur riots and fighting amoung our own people. This would be a slow and terrible death for almost all people. I bet that over 90% of the population would be dead in less than a year. All caused by one single bomb.

I always wondered what we would do in the event of such an attack.aftermath of such an attack. And would it do any good to publicly declare our response?? After all, these lunatics believe that dying is a blessing so any threat of retaliation would be useless.

Any ideas??

Posted by thewiz at August 11, 2005 8:09 AM

I have a better opinion of the resilience of the American people than thewiz. I think with the exception of some extremely complex processes, we would revert to earlier means and provide less sophisiticated solutions and products in a fairly short time.

EMR will only disrupt those things that are working. The effect will be great in the areas effected, but quite a bit will remain unscathed. I would also question the ability of the jihadis to place a device in the desired location in the first place, and in the second, to have one powerful enough to disrupt the entire US.

The megacenters would suffer the most under such a scenario, and the panic will have a greater impact than the actual device in such areas.

The response will probably be martial law, and the first priority to get the electrical power grid up and operating again. Unless an actual short-cirtuit is created burning out the processor, disruption of computers can be recovered from magnetic media backups. I think much of that would not be altered. Modern automobiles would be junk if running when it happened. There would be a huge black market in auto computers for awhile.

I would be more inclined to think the death toll would be around 10-20%, which though horrific would not be of the 90% scale stated.

As for a response, determine the source and glassify. Deathwish or no on the part of the perpetrators, it is simple justice. It would also deter those who, though conquest mad, are sufficiently rational to want to protect their own skins. As I stated in an earlier comment, vigilante justice will also be part of the response, along with draconian restrictions of freedom of speech, of religion, and from search and seizure, and suspension of habeas corpus.

As far as foreign affairs go, given this event, we have enough missiles that we can simply tell China and North Korea to butt out, or else. We won't wait for UN sanctions, allied approval or anything else. We will become what we have been accused of being for years--the biggest, toughest cowboy on the range. The conquest of the Taliban and Saddam Hussein in record time was the proxy for WW III. The Russians and the Chinese now know that they can't take us on head to head. It was their technology and war theory that was so thoroughly trounced in the Middle East.

Look for the UN to immediately be given an eviction notice, and withdrawal of the US from membership. When we are through kicking butt, the entire international scene will be permanently changed. The various ripples will last for decades. I would expect that along the way Taiwan will become independent, and the entire Middle East will experience civil wars and revolts. They will either do like Libya, or find themselves gone. I suspect Saudi Arabia will be told to get rid of the Wahhabis or face some consequences.

This whole scenario of a nuclear event in the US is ugly, horrible to contemplate, and very possible. I am optimistic that the US would recover and deal with all of it. We aren't as far gone into PC land as Great Britain, and they seem to have awakened finally.

Posted by Bill at August 11, 2005 10:41 AM

By the way, it's been done (whether atomic or chemical in origin, the actual magnitude and effect of the Port Chicago explosion is comparable to the small nuclear device scenarios).

Sad, very sad, but in light of current history, it seems to be a possibility. This fellow, who commented, "You need to get out more. Seriously. Dude, have a beer." is obviously not an historian nor aware of former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and his speach about "Peace in our time", or Joseph P. Kennedy as he insisted of a policy of appeasement with Hitler and Charles A. Lindbergh who saw Hitler as a "great man" who had "done much for the German people." (This early judgement was later replaced with a more critical attitude, but Lindbergh never did give up his strong pro-German feelings.) I ask and I continue to ask, did 9/11 happen or is it a clip from a forthcoming Bruce Willis movie?

The Quran predicts, describes and forbids the atomic bomb.

By Allama Muhammad Yousuf Gabriel

If every single soul today living on this earth turns Shakespeare by some miracle, and they chafe themselves to death in their combined effort to describe the horrors of the atomic war, they will never be able to succeed in their enterprise. And if every one of these turns Dante to make a combined effort in portraying the atomic hell in their secular tragedy against the Divine Comedy of Dante they also will fail. Yet this present day world is full of misunderstandings, misconceptions and illusions regarding the atomic hell. Just as no man can see his own face, this present day mankind is quite unable to see the truth of their own making that is the atomic hell. The tragedy of this present mankind however, is a little different. They inspite of their knowledge of the facts do as if they knew it not. The atomic bomb, it is known to them that, it is not a weapon of defence, nor even it is a means of war, rather it is the means of complete annihilation of life on earth, though as yet they know not that it is the wrath of God enkindled against them; and they are busy in building their stockpiles afresh, or are engaged in improving their existing stockpiles. They take their stockpiles as a deterrent to atomic war, and here the doubt approvers in the quality of their understanding, for there could hardly be found another more evident delusion than this. Their behaviour However, in this respect becomes a species of ostriches hypnotized by the influences of the impending doom they are by themselves busily bringing upon themselves.
A single atomic bomb consumes the largest city, killing its inhabitants, crushing its buildings to power, setting on fire all that is combustible therein and covering the whole area with radioactive substances. The megaton thermonuclear bomb lays waste areas equal to large states, causing the fruit of centuries-long toil and labour to disappear as if by a magic wand. The atomic bomb kills those exposed by its heat flash. It buries those in the buildings under those buildings. Those who would escape both these ordeals they are chased by the atomic radiations, and killed or left to live as cancer-ridden, miserable men envying the end of those who died in the event. The radio genetic effects appear in some future generation, changing men, animals and plants into miserable chimeras and making them extinct and rendering this earth uninhabitable for millions of years after that. The desire of building the atomic bombs despite the knowledge of all these hazards is certainly symptom of the suicidal tendency in sheer disappointment. And no doubt, the yearning for joining the atomic bomb builders club is the yearning for joining the universal club of atomic suicide.
God, the creator of this world, anticipated this avalanche of atomic fire, for he had this in His view fourteen years ago. It is fourteen centuries ago that God in the Quran placed His warning about the atomic hell, characterizing the nuclear phenomenon in terms that clearly distinguished and differentiated the characteristics of nuclear phenomenon from the chemical, electrical and gravitational in a most precise and indeed scientific manner. So exact is the characterization, and so comprehensive, that is the wonder and delight of a mind of the caliber of an Einstein, a Chadwick, a Fermi or a Rutherford. His prophecy of the Quran indeed is a miracle, and guidance and the only ay of hope for this present mankind in averting the danger of atomic conflagration. Both this discovery and the work on it which ranges over about fourteen hundred pages in two volumes as a series of atomic hell in my won. Indeed by the Grace of Almighty Allah, unshared. The work has employed nineteen years in the actual treatment of the subject, besides the prior nineteen years as the preparatory period. “2nd December, 1942, the day on which Enrico Fermi succeeded in realizing the slow neutron fission chain reaction in the squash court of Chicago’s stag field or near about was the date of some strange experience to me that set me on the track on the which I trotted unawares till in the year of 1961 my object, the prophecy of the Quran I glanced flashing before the eye of my mind. It was a sort of prepossession, and indeed it has been a heart-breaking- and blood-curdling ordeal of the first victim of the atomic hell since the year of 1942. And now in the year of 1979 I find myself finally prepared to take the test with this key to the destiny of mankind in my hand. Let this be, however, made clear that my treatment of the entire subject throughout has been based on science and philosophy, and nowhere an assertion has been made on the dint of the divine authority of the Quran. The topic being basically of scientific nature has to be treated on the basis of science. No consideration of any kind has been allowed to creep in to influence the trend of thought. It has been throughout, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Strange indeed are the works of the providence. If on the one hand a full world was engaged in the preparation or in aiding and abetting the preparation of the atomic hell, one lonely, obscure person. In some lonely hut, unacquainted with and away from the colleges and laboratories was preoccupied with the preparation of the extinguisher of the fire of the atomic hell, and the neutralizer of the atomic bomb , a work not considered as possible and in a line different from that of the scientist engaged in the nuclear field. And now this is the only hope of mankind. If this cannot save this mankind from the atomic disaster, no other power beneath this blue sky can.
The Quran in its warning against the atomic hell has not only treated the nuclear phenomenon, but has also characterized the Baconian design of modern atomism giving it out as the cause of the appearance of the atomic hell. The Quran has used the term Hotamic Hell which according to the interpreters of the Quran is a hell in the next world. But it is a hell of a peculiar kind as distinct from other types characteristically. The atomic hell of this temporal, transient world is the representation of the eternal Hotamic hell of the next eternal world, Justas fire is the representation of hell, and Garden is of the paradise of the next world. Not only the characteristics of the Hotamic hell as are given by the Quran and of the atomic hell are identical, but also the causes of the punishment in the Hotamic hell and theca uses of the appearance of the atomic hell of this world are the same.
The following is the prophecy of the Quran, rather the prophetic warning. You can call it the Islamic bomb.
“Woe to every backbiter, defamer, who amasseth wealth (of this world) and arrangeth it (against the future). He thinketh that his wealth will render him immortal. Nay, for verily he will be cast into Al-Hotama. And what could teach thee what Al-Hotama is? It is fire of Allah enkindled which leaps up onto the hearts. It is (a fire) closed in on them in outstretched columns”.
(Quran –CIV- al-Homaza)
Following is the characterization of the Hotama by the Quran, which no knowing nuclear scientist in the world can deny is the exact characterization of the atomic energy:-
The Quran has called it Hotama. Hotama means a crusher, a breaker so is the atomic energy a crusher, a breaker. The atomic energy is the binding energy of the atomic nucleus and is generated by breaking, crushing the binding of the nucleus of the atom. This is a characteristic of the atomic energy which is a distinguishing characteristic of the atomic energy, for; it distinguishes it from every other type of energy, chemical, electrical or gravitational. No other energy excepting the atomic energy is generated by merely breaking something or crushing. And because the atomic energy crushes the atom which is the basic building block of the universe, and so also the atomic radiation crushes the nucleus of the cell which is the basic unit of life, the atomic energy might deservedly be called as the absolute crusher.
The Quran says: “The fire of Hotama is one that leaps up onto the hearts”. And so does the atomic energy. The atomic particles leap up onto the nuclei of these atoms in the fission process of the generation of atomic energy and energy is generated. In the case of the fusion process the heat produced by the inner fission device is directed onto the fusile material, and the nuclei of the atoms of the fusile material are fused together in groups and the atomic energy is liberated. The Quran has used the word hearts whereas the scientist has used the word nuclei. These two words, that is the heart and the nucleus are synonymous and are used in the same meanings. The authority of the scientist himself in this respect is on our side. The scientists themselves call frequently the nucleus as heart, and the standard text books of atomic physics are replete with the examples in which the nucleus of the atom has been called as heart. We will cite but two examples:-
“Each fast particle comes from the break up of the very heart of a single atom … the nucleus…of the radioactive material”. (Vide Physics, physical science study committee… second edition. D.C.Heath and Company Lexington, Massachusetts. July 1965. Page 130)
“How many nuclear heart-beats are there in the life-time of a radio-active nucleus which lasts but billionth of a second”
(Ibid : Page 21 .Short problems)
That the atomic energy is generated within the nuclei of the atoms is a distinguishing characterizes of the atomic energy, for no other kind of energy is generated within the nuclei. Every other type of energy, chemical, electrical, gravitational leaves the nuclei of the atoms untouched and intact. The term nuclear science at once decides the point.
The Quran says “The fire of Hotama is closed in on them”. So has the atomic energy encompassing features. Out of numerous examples we will cite but two. Firstly that, whereas the radiations attack the cell in its resting stage, the effects of radiations appear only in the anaphase of the cell. Secondly that, the radiations mutate the genes of any one generation, while the effects of the radiogenetic effects appear after the lapse of several generations, leaving the intervening generations without any apparent effect.
The Quran says : “The fire of Hotama is a fire closed in on them in outstretched columns”. The outstretched column of the atomic bomb explosion is so evident t hat it has become a symbol of the atomic bomb.
The Quran says : “What could teach thee what Al-hotama is “? And indeed so complex, so bafflingly complex is the subject of nuclear science that the very same question could be put to any nuclear scientist, namely, “what could teach thee what the subject of nuclear sciences is ?”. And the answer will invariably be, Nothing”.
Turning to the philosophical side of the prophecy we find the characterization of the Baconian philosophy of modern atomism.
The Quran says. “Woe to every backbiter and defamer”. The habit of backbiting the doctrines of faith is the inherent characteristic of the ancient atheistic philosophy of atomism of Greek atomists. The habit of backbiting in the modern age of atomism has received an intellectual and sophisticated turn as is complained by the leading writers of this age in the west. The change of the meanings of the word propaganda from mere propagation to defamation in this modern age of atomism would furnish a sufficient proof for the unfortunate fact.
The Quran says : He amasseth wealth of this world and arrangeth it against the future”. There could hardly be found a more vivid description of the modern continuous, systematic, ever-increasing, and infinite progress which is based on Bacon’s design of modern atomism, i.e. the attainment of man’s dominion over nature for material utility through continuous, systematic and infinite research of science as the actual business of man on earth.
The Quran says “He thinketh that his wealth will render him immortal”. This means that He is so deeply engrossed in the pursuit of the wealth of this world, and is so over solicitous about the durability and flourishing of the worldly material works as if he thinks he has forever to live in this world. This exactly is the case of the present day mankind, the follower of the Bacon’s design of modern atomism. So obvious is the fact of wealth accumulating tendencies of this age, and salacious is the man of today in the durability of the worldly works hat it hardly needs to expand many words in pointing thereto.
But the Quran says, “Nay, for verily he will be cast into Al-Hotama”. That is His notion of for ever living in this world and remaining for ever rich will be broken by casting both him and his wealth into Hotama to be crushed and consumed. And now exactly the position is that the mankind today stands on the brink of being cast into the atomic hell, both he and his wealth, which it has been accumulating or centuries. There is no dreamy vision, nor indeed are the alarmist views, the inhabitants of Late Hiroshima and Nagasaki stand as very reliable witnesses. New York Moscow, London, Peking, Tokyo, Sydny, Jekartha, Delhi, Islamabad could not be considered exceptions if the mentality of this present-day mankind persists, and the stockpiles exist.

"The Quran predicts, describes and forbids the atomic bomb. (By Allama Muhammad Yousuf Gabriel)"

..and yet your country acquired the bomb, Iran acquired the bomb, Saudi Arabia is seeking it...

Sorry, not buying it, Allama.

The Usurper would tell our military to stand down, as this attack was our fault, and so our punishment that we must absorb and learn from.

Advice I gave for a hoped-for President Romney:

1. Announce the establishment of a List, on which will be the names of all nations founded on Islam.

2. Set a deadline for those nations to adopt laws that remove Islamic parties from power, renounce the use of force against non-Islamic peoples, grant fully equal civil rights to women, and repeal laws that discriminate in any way against the practice of other religions within their borders.

3. Place all nations that do not take these measures on a separate List, perhaps named something like the "Strong Horse Is Terrible" list.

4. Announce that any attack on the United States or its citizens anywhere in the world will be assumed to have originated with a nation on the above S.H.I.T. list, and that response(s) will be forthcoming at the time, location, and megatonnage of our discretion.

Only comment is that Miramar NAS is unlikely to suffer significant damage. There are several minor ridges between the blast point and the flightline. More likely fallout than fire/blast damage.

Although the odds would be against it happening, if it did during a period of Santa Ana winds, most if not all of the fallout would be blown out to sea. Camp Pendelton is also too far north to be impacted in any significant way.

These points do not detract from the story - only people that live or have lived here would note it. I am 20 miles from ground zero and have determined adequate fallout shelter in my area that I can go to ground in less than an hour in. However, due to even more ridges between me and ground zero, except for flash blindness as a remote possibility, direct blast damage is highly unlikely.

doug says:

"...nuking Mecca and Medina. The question is, will that be enough?"

Well, it's a start. I like it. But 0bama will never do that to his co-religionists.

Something along the lines of this scenario is probably inevitable. We can feel it simmering, no? I know I can.

The world is full of crazies. And not just Islamists, although they top the list. All they need is a WMD of some kind. Sooner or later, one of the crazies will get their hands on one. Nuke, biological, or chemical. It's just a matter of time.

And you can count on 0bama using that excuse to impose martial law, suspend habeus corpus [Lincoln already set that precedent], and ensconce himself permanently.

Is there any doubt? After Caesar, the Republic was never restored. It was replaced by emperors, who eventually dropped all pretense and became kings.

It's human nature in action. Who's gonna stop him? [Don't say "the military"; Gen. Petraeus was a wake-up call to every general officer. The military will be the easiest to deal with, especially if there is an external threat. And they already got to Chief Justice John Roberts on 0bamacare, so forget the courts.]

It's over, folks. The Manchurian Candidate wins.
