When I was in journalism school, I was never once told that journalism was a "profession." It is really a craft or a trade, but certainly not a profession. Medicine is a profession, law is a profession, but not reportage. Thus is not demean reporters (after all, they're doing quite well demeaning themselves these days), it is to be more precise in language and meaning than is usually the case.
