IIRC, Rockwell Kent's main distinction was his CPUS membership and his adherence to Early Soviet Art styles. When I was growing up, we had a volume of Shakespeare illustrated by RK, that my mother, who was anti-Soviet, loved. I still have it, but the text is pretty worthless.

Response to Folio Mag re the "Sexiest Man Alive" feature in People:

Dylan: this is NOT the first use of scratch and sniff editorially. On Ladies' Home Journal's September 2008 cover of the Obamas (when I was still EIC), I had an inset of an apple pie that was scratch and sniff. I had tested the concept on earlier issue as well. Sure, it's not as jaunty as sniffing a sexy man, but it was still innovative. Would appreciate the credit."

I tried to tell 'em about Larry Flint and the first scratchandsniff centerfold in Hustler (remember that?) but for some reason they wouldn't post my comment...

Well, my previous ejaculation was, ah, premature,it seems. Folio mag HAS posted my observation re Larry Flint's of scratch and sniff. Oh frabjous joy!!

It's truly a momentous day in my life to be included in a thread that features self-effacing commentary like this:

"Sexiest Man Alive Rub and Smell

Hi Dylan, As the Sensory Marketing Consultant for both the People Magazine Kraft(13 scents in one issue) and Sexiest Man Alive issues(as well as many other scented magazine and catalog pages),I am constantly amazed at the selective use of sensory marketing tools in magazines[.......]The future of magazines should be a sensory marketplace-otherwise, who needs the printed page. My hats (how many, one wonders) off to the forward thinking management at People Magazine. Best regards, Arthur Sherwood Scent id LLC scentid@aol.com"

There's a line in here somewhere about the NYT not stinking enough, but I can't come up with it....

I was shocked when I first saw photos of actual sperm whales; they looked nothing like the illustrations.
