Really, once you're talking like a pirate, this next stage isn't such a huge leap. It's all mindset. Arrrrrr . . . .

Kwaesha Longbottom's reflexive racism would easily be cured if she were taken hostage by one if those fine Somalis who are looking for a better life. Pirate, shmirate! A yardarm is only necessary for captured pirates. Most pirates should be killed "fighting to their deaths" rather than captured, as they should know their only possible end is to die or to hang immediately after being caught.

May I suggest letters of marque as a perfectly reasonable way to deter piracy, at zero cost to any law-abiding nation? Any attempted piracy could be thwarted, their pirate ships taken, sunk, burned or destroyed, their ports ravaged, and their pirate booty confiscated as lawful prizes. There are plenty of adventurous young people in the civilized world willing and able to lawfully engage the pirates at their own game.

Perhaps Naval Armed Guards should be provided for US flag ships. Being naval gun crews there should not be a problem with port restrictions.

A few 20mm guns, a few recoiless rifles, and the short run problem is solved. The long run problem needs the destruction of pirate ports.

I do appreciate the Mjolnir reference, BZ, but is it REALLY so "revolting" to say that murderous, kidnapping scum who target civilians for theft and violence should be dealt with in a manner other than negotiating with them, paying them and, thus, incentivizing their behavior? I mean, maybe it's just me, but I don't find it entirely unreasonable to say that if criminals show up with guns looking for a fight, sometimes it's best (and certainly the most fun) to just give them a fight. A fight they lose. Big time.
