Side-Lines

I got a stern lecture back in the liberated 70s when I told them I wanted to be a good wife and mother. Boy, did the steam come out of their ears. They used every argument in the book on me. I shut them up with an argument along these lines:

I had no mother. She died when I was 8. My father couldn't cope with her death and spent most of his days working at a job he hated, and nights playing piano in bars. But never mind. I never saw him much, and I never went to any Mother - Daughter teas, either. I found out the hard way what a monthly was, and would gladly like to have my mother back for five minutes just to ask her,
"Why the hell did you leave us?"

I think my argument trumps theirs.

Still, your point is well-taken. Most young women don't want to be wives. It's because they can't cook.

From what I see in the news, they make shitty mothers too.
